Follow me on a 2-Day Road Trip to Bruny Island. Bruny Island – Day 1 Our journey to Bruny Island started with a 20 minutes ferry from Kettering Ferry Terminal to cross the beautiful D’Entrecasteaux Channel. 1. Great Bay Once arrived at Bruny Island, we headed down south towards a little docking bay off Great Bay Road in Great Bay. The water here was crystal clear, with beautiful rocks and shells on the water bank. We then visited Get Shucked and Bruny Island Cheese Company, which are located within hundreds of meters of each other. 2. Get Shucked Get Shucked is a locally owned business, that specialises in fresh oysters. The oysters here are farmed in and freshly harvested from the Great Bay area. How the oysters are shucked and prepared can also be viewed from the oyster bar. There is also an oyster drive through available for takeaways. 3. Bruny Island Cheese Company Bruny Island Cheese Company offers a variety of cheese and a range of Tasmanian beverages, especially beer. If unsure of what to choose from, the friendly staff were great with their pairing suggestions. 4. The Neck Lookout The Neck is an isthmus connecting North and South Bruny. This area is also an important habitat for native animals, such as short-tailed shearwaters and fairy penguins. There is a set of 279 stairs from the car park, which will take you directly to the lookout platform. From the lookout, you will find big waves crashing in on one side of the isthmus, and tranquil water with black swans roaming around on the other side of the isthmus. The contrast between these two was so surreal and breathtakingly beautiful. The Neck Lookout, Bruny Island 5. Adventure Bay After soaking in the views from The Neck, we headed towards Adventure Bay. There are a few lookouts and beaches to explore in Adventure Bay, such as Coal Point, Two Tree Point, and Adventure Bay Beach. All of them will provide you with a glance at the beautiful landscape of Adventure Bay. By the time we left Adventure Bay, the rain had gotten heavier. In the spirit of not wasting the day, we braved the rain and drove towards Cloudy Bay. 6. Cloudy Bay Cloudy Bay is at the southern end of Bruny Island. It was mainly unsealed roads leading to Cloudy Bay, which was tricky to drive on in wet weather. Thankfully, the beauty of this hidden paradise made the drive well worth it. Here, all we could find were large crashing waves with untouched nature, tucked away from regular foot traffic. However, we had to leave this place earlier than expected, because the rain was getting heavier and heavier, with huge dark clouds looming in. It was definitely a cloudy day in Cloudy Bay. Adventure Bay, Bruny Island Bruny Island – Day 2 1. Sunrise at The Neck and Adventure Bay The heavy rainfall on day-1 has disrupted our plans. As a result, we were unable to watch sunset and fairy penguins at The Neck as previously planned. Instead, we woke up early the next morning and watched the sunrise at The Neck and Adventure Bay. The sunrise from both of these places was magnificent, which I highly suggest. In addition, there was barely any traffic early in the morning on Bruny Island, and we had this place all to ourselves to explore. 2. Cape Bruny Lighthouse After breakfast, we visited Cape Bruny Lighthouse. Similar to the drive towards Cloudy Bay, the roads leading to the lighthouse was also unsealed roads. Therefore, I do suggest driving a robust vehicle to visit where possible. Cape Bruny Lighthouse is located at the southernmost tip of Bruny Island. With a blue sky in the background, the water, the cliffs, and the lighthouse all looked so captivating. We also joined the 20 minutes guided lighthouse tour for an unobstructed panoramic view of the beautiful Cape Bruny and the Tasman Sea, which was one of the highlights of our trip. Cape Bruny Lighthouse Should You Visit Bruny Island as Day Trip or Overnight Trip? Bruny Island was among the most memorable places we visited in Tasmania. Its beautifully preserved nature and abundant wildlife, made this place feel like a hidden paradise. We especially enjoyed how secluded this place felt in the late afternoon and early morning when most day-trippers have left the island. You can certainly visit Bruny Island as a day trip, but I highly suggest staying for at least a night on Bruny Island.
