Where to Stay in Freycinet National Park

Planning a visit to the beautiful Freycinet National Park and wondering where to stay?

Here is a list of the popular locations to stay in this area. The pros and cons of these locations are also listed here. Hope you can find them helpful.

Freycinet National Park

Hotels are available within Freycinet National Park.

Campgrounds are available within this national park as well.

Although the locations of these accommodations are superb, their price tags are also among the dearest in this area.

Coles Bay

Coles Bay is the closest town to the national park, with a range of accommodations on offer.

Since it is outside of the national park, accommodations in Coles Bay are much cheaper than within Freycinet National Park.

However, since Coles Bay is a relatively small town, there aren’t many restaurants and shops available in Coles Bay.

Bicheno

Bicheno is a bigger town than Coles Bay, with a lot more eateries and shops on offer. Accommodations here are also among the cheapest in this area.

In addition, as a seaside village, Bicheno is worth a visit in its own right.

Here, you can enjoy an intimate encounter with Tasmania’s wildlife from East Coast Natureworld; visit the stunning Diamond Island during low tide; watch the impressive Bicheno Blowhole at sunset; join a rewarding penguin tour in the evening.

The only con with basing yourself in Bicheno is that it takes about 30 minutes to drive from Bicheno to Freycinet National Park.

Is it Better to Stay in Coles Bay or Bicheno?

In general, Bicheno offers cheaper accommodation choices than Coles Bay. However, this is at the cost of an extra 30 minutes drive to and from the national park.

Nonetheless, Bicheno is self-sufficient, with a lot more restaurants, cafes, and shops to choose from. You can also easily spend a full day in Bicheno itself, to explore the activities and attractions Bicheno has to offer.

Final Verdict – Where to Stay in Freycinet National Park

If an extra 30 minutes drive to and from the national park does not bother you much, I would suggest basing yourself in Bicheno. In this way, you will have the cheapest accommodations to choose from, with good access to eateries and shops. You will also get to enjoy the beautiful nature and wildlife Bicheno has to offer.

However, if that extra 30 minutes drive to and from Freycinet National Park is a deal-breaker for you, Coles Bay could be the better option here. In this way, you will have the national park right at your doorstep.

For those with a more generous budget, a stay in Freycinet National Park might work out better for you. In this way, you will have the freedom to explore the wilderness of this national park at all times.
